What makes Buddhism a religion not a philosophy?

Head Temple Taisekiji gate

Buddhism is recognized as one of the fastest growing religions in the world. Yet one of the most frequent questions asked of our Chief Priest during our Introduction meetings is:

Is Buddhism a religion or is it a philosophy?

Often, what confuses Americans is the “practice” aspect of Buddhism. Practice is the means by which we put into action the conviction of our Buddhist faith and make real in our own daily lives, the Buddhist theories and concepts.

This Saturday, April 13th, we will be hosting another Introduction to Buddhism meeting.  Join us at 2:00 pm to learn about Buddhism and how to chant Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. Also, bring your questions about Buddhism and ask them of Rev. Murata during the Q&A portion of the meeting. You can email the Temple or call us if you have any questions about the meeting.
