If we speak gentle words based on our compassion for others, we can delight the hearts of the people who listen to us. (Hoben chapter of the Lotus Sutra)
Compassion for yourself, compassion for others is a tenet in Buddhism. Although we may try our best to emulate the compassion of the True Buddha, we cannot easily summon such deep compassion from within ourselves because our lives are stained by the three poisons of greed, anger and ignorance. However, when we single-mindedly chant Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, our lives become fused with the enlightened life of the True Buddha, which illuminates, reveals and draws out our Buddha nature from the depths of our lives.
