Buddhism: Repay Your Debts of Gratitude

One who studies the teachings of Buddhism must not fail to repay the four debts of gratitude.
(The Four Debts of Gratitude Gosho written by Nichiren Daishonin, 13th century Japan)

Every month at the Oko Ceremony, our Chief Priest, Rev Sakabe, lectures about Buddhism. A frequent topic is the concept of gratitude. Many of the writings (called Gosho) of Nichiren Daishonin, the founder of Nichiren Shoshu, explain what the four debts of gratitude are:

  • gratitude to all living beings
  • gratitude to one’s father and mother
  • gratitude to one’s sovereign
  • gratitude to the Three Treasures – the Buddha, the Law and the Priesthood

Understanding our debts of gratitude and how to repay them is how one develops a happy life. Being compassionate, practicing Buddhism for yourself and others, helping others to learn Buddhism, are ways to repay our debts of gratitude.
