Buddhism: Desire, Awareness & Happiness

The pre-Lotus Sutra teachings required people to discard their earthly desires before being able to attain Buddhahood or enlightenment. However, the Lotus Sutra teaches people to transform their earthly desires into enlightenment and to achieve Buddhahood in their present form. These represent the principles of “earthly desires are enlightenment” and “the sufferings of birth and death are in themselves nirvana.”

The Flame of Earthly Desires

We all are humans who possess many earthly desires. Through our Buddhist practice of chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo we are able to transform our earthly desires into enlightenment, transforming ourselves into individuals who can pray for the happiness of not just ourselves but also of others and for peace to reign throughout the world.
