When we look at a person’s face, at times he appears joyful, enraged or calm. At other times, we may see the appearance of greed, foolishness or flattery. Anger is a manifestation of the world of hell, greed is a manifestation of the world of hunger, stupidity is a manifestation of the world of animality, fawning is the manifestation of arrogance, calmness is a manifestation of the world of humanity, and joy is a manifestation of the world of rapture. These six paths all exist in the physical appearance of his face. The four noble worlds are eclipsed, and they are not revealed in the face. However, a careful search would show that they are actually there.
written by Nichiren Daishonin in 13th century Japan
There are people whose lives are consumed completely by their desires. Some people constantly argue with others. By contrast, there are individuals who always work for the good of others. These people are different because they individually are affected by the karmic bonds that cause them to manifest the ten worlds.
