My Daily Buddhist Practice: Morning Water

When I first wake in the morning …

I try NOT to start looking at my phone. Instead, I dress and go to my Buddhist altar and offer water to the Buddha, the Gohonzon.

This simple act of offering water lets me set my intention for doing morning prayers (sutra recitation) and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo. Since I began doing this, I have not missed morning prayers. It’s a habit I am very happy to have started.

To learn more about why we make offerings on the altar, visit our web site, The Buddhist altar: significance of the water cup. We also have a short video series on YouTube.

My Buddhist Daily Practice is a new contributory blog written by Myosenji Temple Buddhists. We hope to post regularly about our experiences with our daily practice of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism.
