Karma: Bring Out the Better Part of You

Even if a medicine is compounded with one hundred or one thousand ingredients, one’s illness will not be cured unless one puts it in his mouth. Even if one owns treasures in a storehouse, he will starve unless he opens it. Even if one carries medicine in his pocket, he will die unless he takes it.

written by Nichiren Daishonin, 13th century Japan

As this golden passage from the Buddha guides us, nothing will be done if we take no action. Changing your Karma, the dominant cause of unhappiness and suffering in the present, is the action we need to be doing every day.

How can you change your Karma? Visit our Buddhist Temple this Sunday, January 20th, and hear our Chief Priest, Rev Sakabe’s, lecture on Karma and Buddhism. He will teach you how to change your Karma and explain why owning and changing your Karma makes you a more compassionate, wise person. He will also teach you how to practice Buddhism.

  • Learn how to chant Nam Myoho Renge Kyo and properly use the Juzu Beads, Buddhist prayer beads.
  • Q&A with our Chief Priest.
  • The meeting begins at 2:00 pm and concludes about 3:15 pm. Open to the public.
  • 310 University Blvd West, Silver Spring, MD 20901 (entrance on Burnett Ave)

If you have decided to become a Buddhist or are interested in learning how to become a Buddhist, after Sunday’s meeting (about 3:30 pm) Rev Sakabe will be performing the Acceptance of the Precept Ceremony, the ceremony where you become a Buddhist.
